Life in the Kitchen

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

A series of drawings over an evening, mostly documenting people as they came and went in the kitchen. Experimenting with a number of different stylistic approaches, though the actual medium is very similar throughout.

Ink

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

We’re getting started with ink. Today the room was filled with plants in pots, with a few odd skulls and such scattered around for variety and to keep them company.

Drawings Started and Finished

Today was the last day for using vine charcoal in drawing class—next week we’ll be moving on to ink. In the interest of mixing things up and as a fun experiment, I decided to swap drawings after an early critique with another student in the class. Each drawing was worked on for an equal amount of time: I spent half an hour on the first and 1.5 hours on the second, while the opposite was true for her. Here are the results.

Tuesday’s Perspective Study

Friday, April 16th, 2010 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

Another newsprint drawing out of class. Today the junk was stacked vertically, in order to force the students to practice perspective. Above, below, and side-to-side. To me, it doesn’t look like much to show for two hours of drawing and measuring.

Disorganized Space

Another day in the drawing class. Today I was working on conveying depth, mostly by muddling and erasing lines farther in the background. I’m not sure how well it worked out, but I like the overall effect.

Quicker Kitchen Study

Thursday, April 8th, 2010 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

A friend was working in the kitchen—creating some cilantro sauce in the blender—and consented to my doing some pencil drawing of the proceedings.

Drawing Class

We were drawing cubes. I was drawing us. Well, really the whole room. At any rate, the focus for the day was exploration of negative shape and (of course) proportion.
