3D, MIA, Yadayada.

I’ve been MIA, but not without productivity. I spent about 15-20 hours on this, I think, although I’m not counting any of that time towards my drawing counter, despite some of those hours being spent painting textures and so forth. Far from perfect, but I’m fairly happy with my progress on the texturing side of things, and it’s as far as I plan to take it. I’m only posting the image so that it is well known that I am not dead. We now return to your regularly scheduled drawing-blogging. (Tomorrow.)

I might be digging my own grave, but, I don’t see why you shouldn’t add the time spent on this project to your total. It’s just an artistic pursuit as my copper plate etchings or Felix’s Illustrator pieces.

I agree with Jimerson. Any artistic endeavor should be added to your drawing time. Especially if you got caught up with it and that’s why you didn’t have time to draw. lol

Although I initially said, “No, 3D is separate,” I’m inclined to ultimately agree that it would probably be fine, if that’s where you want to spend your art hours.

The other hand of the issue (where I was before) is that the goal is to spend 1000 hours on drawing-related things — so if you spend 650 of those on 3D, well, you aren’t going to be as good at drawing by the end as you’d perhaps hoped.

The reason I feel that 3D should be added to art hours is that when working with objects in 3D an artist increases his perception. This carries over to traditional drawing in terms of shading and perspective, as well as a better understanding of how objects interact with one another in the spaces you can’t see. So, it’s like a mind exercise for drawing with the added bonus of producing art.
